Legacy Timeline & List view

Time Tracking: Classic Legacy version Handbook Guide to using the Legacy Timeline and List view in Timely.

The Legacy Timeline & List view is the original Hours experience in Timely. While it’s still fully functional, the Classic Timeline & List view is a significant upgrade across the board. Here’s why we recommend making the switch.

Why Classic is a big upgrade

Smarter memory display

Classic introduces a Summary Lane that shows only the most relevant memory per time block, giving you a cleaner overview without the noise. You also get fine-tuned control over how memories appear:

  • Memory Continuity — ignore brief app switches to maintain a smooth activity flow
  • Noise Cancellation — hide micro-memories from rapid multitasking
  • Grouping Control — toggle between unified and granular memory views
  • Display Options — show file names, app names only, or just logos for a minimalist view

A dedicated List view

Classic adds an entirely new List view that groups your memories by app and file name rather than time. Activities are sorted by duration so you can immediately see where your time went — a perspective the Legacy experience doesn’t offer.

AI Timesheet Assistant

The Classic experience includes a built-in AI Timesheet Assistant that learns your project and tagging patterns over time. It generates one-click suggestions for entire time blocks, complete with AI-written notes that turn raw memory titles into professional, client-ready summaries.

Customization and flexibility

Classic gives you far more control over your workspace:

  • Highlight Columns — pin your most-used apps into dedicated columns with quick-log buttons
  • Always on Top — freeze important columns so they stay visible as you scroll
  • Suggestion Styles — choose between Exact, Efficient, or Concise AI suggestions depending on how granular you want your entries
  • Independent view settings — Timeline and List views have separate configurations

What you’ll lose when switching to Classic

Switching to Classic means saying goodbye to two Legacy-specific features:

  • Drag and drop functionality — in Legacy, you can drag memories directly onto your timeline to create entries. Classic uses a different entry-building flow instead.
  • Per-memory AI predictions — Legacy’s AI system predicts which project an individual memory belongs to. Classic replaces this with the Timesheet Assistant, which works at the time-block level rather than per memory.
