Creating a custom user field
Custom fields let you make user profiles more tailored to your needs. Whether you need to track specific project roles, internal info, or anything else, you can easily create and manage these fields in just a few clicks.
To get started:
- Log into Timely and head to the Workspace Settings area
- Hit the ”+ Add Custom Field” button
- Name your field (keep it under 25 characters)
- Click Save — your custom field is now live and ready for action
Deleting a custom user field
To delete a custom field:
- Head back to the same Workspace Settings area within Timely
- Find the custom field you want to remove and click the Delete button (trash icon)
- Confirm your decision, and the field and all its associated values/data will be gone for good
How to use custom user fields
Custom fields are super flexible and easy to manage! Here’s how you can make the most out of them:
Managing the data in custom user fields
Once you’ve added your custom fields they’ll appear in each user’s profile. You can then add or edit the data contained within those fields whenever you’d like.
To do so, head to the People Dashboard in Timely. Click the ”…” button next to the user, then select Edit User. From there, simply scroll down until you see the custom fields, and enter your desired data.
Once created you’ll see those same custom fields when creating a new user as well, so you can add in your desired data right from the start.
Exporting the data from custom user fields
Need to pull your custom data out? Exporting is a breeze:
- Navigate to the Reports Dashboard in Timely
- Select your reporting template, add and filter your desired data, and click the Export button along the top
- Select either the CSV or Excel export option and ensure you have the Custom user fields option selected
- Finalize your export — you’ll get all the custom fields in your CSV/Excel file, each with its own column with the data values in each row
FAQs
How many custom fields can I create?
You can create up to 50 custom fields.
Can I delete a custom field without losing data?
No. Once you hit delete, it’s gone forever, data and all. Make sure you’re absolutely certain before clicking that button.
Are custom fields included in exports?
Yes, all of them! Just like tags, you can export all custom fields in one go.
Do I need to be an Admin in order to export custom fields?
No. Other roles, like employees and managers, can export custom field data or edit the data values in those custom fields as long as they’ve got the right permissions. However, only Admins can create and edit the custom fields themselves.
