[Comparisons](/all-alternatives/) › Timely vs Toggl

# Toggl and Timely cost the same. Only one writes your timesheet.

Toggl's timer counts the time you remember to count, and its Timeline leaves you to turn the day into entries yourself. For the same annual price, Timely drafts the timesheet and you check it.

## What Toggl gets right

Toggl made the timer a pleasure to use. It's quick to start and easy to like, and its Timeline stays private to each person.

- A free plan for up to 3 people and a 30-day trial
- ISO 27001 and SOC 2 Type II certification
- Timesheet approvals that lock each approved period

## A timer is a promise to remember

When two tools cost the same, price stops being the question. The question becomes who does the paperwork.

A timer is a promise to remember, made at the moment your mind is on something else. G2 reviewer Richard found starting Toggl's timer a chore and stopping it impossible. A barrister who moved to Timely had to rebuild his time whenever he forgot.

Toggl's Timeline helps, but it's a diary you still have to transcribe. It records your apps and sites, then hands you the log. The new Toggl app suggests entries for you to confirm. Transcribing still comes last, so it gets put off, and Friday-you inherits Monday's paperwork.

A busy day gets counted in full.

Starting a timer relies on prospective memory, the kind that fails first when you're busy. Timely records the day as it happens, so the busiest days stop being the least accurate.

An example day of 6h 30m. In Toggl: 6h 30m of app activity, still to be turned into entries. In Timely: 6h 30m drafted across 3 projects, ready to check and submit.

An example day, for illustration.

## Timely changes the default

In Toggl, the default is a timer to remember or a log to sort through. In Timely, the default is a draft.

1. ### Memory records the day

The Memory app notes the apps, documents, sites, and meetings you work in, privately, on your Mac or PC. Nobody else can see it, admins included.

2. ### AutoSheet drafts the timesheet

Each morning, AutoSheet turns yesterday into a draft: projects, hours, and notes, linked to the work behind them.

3. ### You check it and submit

Fix anything that looks wrong and submit. Nothing reaches the shared timesheet until you do.

## Bring Toggl with you

Timely's Toggl importer brings your structure across, so nobody starts from a blank page.

1. ### Connect Toggl

A Timely admin who owns the Toggl workspace pastes their Toggl API token into Timely's integrations settings.

2. ### Choose what comes across

Pick projects, clients and people. Tags arrive in their own list. People join as unassigned, so nobody is billed until you invite them.

3. ### Bring your history if you want it

Past time entries come across with CSV import on Premium and up.

## Questions about Timely vs Toggl

Toggl records my apps too. What's different?

Toggl's Timeline records the apps and sites you use and shows you the log. You still turn it into time entries yourself, or confirm the entries it suggests. Timely's AutoSheet drafts the whole day as a timesheet each morning, with projects, hours and notes. You check it and submit.

Can I import from Toggl?

Yes. The Toggl importer brings projects, clients, people and tags. You'll need to be a Timely admin and the Toggl workspace owner. Past time entries come across with CSV import on Premium and up.

Is Timely cheaper than Toggl?

Billed annually, the prices match: $9 a person on Starter and $16 on Premium. Billed monthly, Timely costs less, at $11 and $20 against Toggl's $12 and $24. Timely Starter covers up to 5 people and 20 projects.

Does Timely have timesheet approvals like Toggl?

Not as a dedicated queue. On Premium and up, teams build approvals with time entry states, such as Submitted and Approved, and managers filter and update entries in bulk. Toggl has a proper approvals queue on its Premium plan.

Does Timely have a free plan?

No. Timely has a 14-day free trial with every feature, and you don’t need a card to start. Toggl has a free plan for up to 3 people.

Can my manager see my activity?

No. Your Memory is private to you, and admins can't open it. They see the timesheet you submit. Toggl's Timeline is private in the same way.
